A Brand New Challenge
The continuing story of the Warren Street Rat Pack
|
Our team registered for the Greenway Challenge with our usual enthusiasm and everything seemed to be in order for the big day in September. Same team members same team name. Sure our bodies had aged two more years since we first participated in the event, but we were still in pretty good shape, or so we thought.
The first sign of trouble came with the rumors of possible high treason. The word on the street was that one of our beloved team members was plotting to defect and to start a new team. There was even talk that he would be taking our well-seasoned driver with him. How could this be? We were all for one and one for all, a tight knit group, a well-oiled machine and we didnt finish in last place again last year.
No sooner had the remaining team members come up with a scheme to keep our lineup intact, our star runner reported that she would be benched from training due to herniated disks. Our other runner soon followed and expressed grave concern for her foot trouble. The final obstacle our team faced came with the news that one of our only paddlers announced that she would be taking on the challenge of motherhood instead this year. She would be eight months pregnant come the day of the race. It was five months before the day of the event and we were already hurting.
I often wondered why the number of tri-athletes entering the race seemed to be increasing year after year. By this point I was pretty sure I had my answer. It was far too early to give up on the team. Even if we lost two members to injury, one to maternity leave and another to treason we would still have five people left. We were the team who stuck together through thick and thin, through leaky canoes and lack of proper training. We had team spirit and we would just have to use it!
When the going gets tough, it is time for the tough to get going. The team would have some hard work ahead. The obstacles we faced only enhanced the level of achievement we would all feel once reaching that finish line at this years Greenway Challenge.
I am still not sure if this story will end up being one about team perseverance or the making of a tri-athlete. I suppose I really wont know until the day of the race. I do know that if we can hold the team together, those of us who do manage to make it to the starting line on the day of the race will already be claiming victory. |
