Events and News 'Spring-Up' from Greenway Challenge!

Calling all non-profits!

Every year the Greenway Challenge Steering Committee is proud to make a charitable contribution to a Blackstone Valley non-profit organization that is also working in the same way as our mission: “To promote the recreational quality of life in the Blackstone River Valley”. Working with partner organizations, the Greenway Challenge supports clean water campaigns, hiking and biking trails, wildlife projects, environmental education and development of water way access.

Last year, we presented a check for $2,500 to the Blackstone River Coalition which is a partnership of numerous organizations and individuals working to restore and protect water quality and wildlife habitat in the Blackstone River Corridor and advocating for sound land use in the Blackstone River Watershed.

If you think your organization would benefit from a contribution from this year’s Greenway Challenge and if your organization is able to host a transition site on the day of the event, please send us a letter of no more than two pages outlining what your mission is and how your organization would use this donation. A representative from your organization should then be prepared to be involved in the event’s pre-planning by attending monthly logistics committee meetings along with your organization’s commitment to host the transition site on the day of the event.

Please include your organization’s name, the contact person’s daytime phone number and e-mail address, the group’s mailing address and web site URL. The submission should be mailed to Greenway Challenge Request, One Depot Square, Woonsocket, RI 02895 Attn: Barbara Dixon by April 30, 2007.

This month the Woonsocket Rotary awarded its Vocational Service Award to Kevin Plouffe.

"Challengers in the News".......see what they do off the course !

Woonsocket Rotary honors Kevin Plouffe - We all know Kevin as the Team Captain and paddler for the "Woonsocket Teachers Guild," Team #59 in the Championship Division, which finished in third place in last year's Greenway Challenge. But did you also know that Kevin is the Band Director for Woonsocket High School?

This month the Woonsocket Rotary awarded its' Vocational Service Award to Kevin Plouffe. The award is given to an individual "who adheres to the highest ethical standards, including faithfulness and fidelity to their employer, employees and associates, fair treatment of them and of their competitors, the public, as well as all those with whom they have any business or professional relationships and the contribution of one's vocational talents to the problems and needs of society." And if you know Kevin, you surely know how deserving he is of this award!

Kevin is in his 12th year as Band Director at Woonsocket High School, is a Burrillville, RI, resident and has competed in the Blackstone River Valley Greenway Challenge for all six years with his team from the Woonsocket Teachers Guild. He holds a masters degree in music education with an emphasis on conducting from the University of Rhode Island, teaches percussion at Brown University and conducts the Brown University Percussion Ensemble.

Congratulations Kevin on a much deserving award!

Jennifer Shultis presented the Ironwoman trophy!

On January 4, 2007, Jennifer Shultis was presented the First Ironwoman Trophy at the Annual Meeting of the Blackstone River Coalition held in Woonsocket, RI.  Jennifer has competed in the Triathlete Division for the last two years representing Eastern Mountain Sports.  In 2005 Jennifer placed overall as a Triathlete in 4th place, with a time of 5:15’03 and in 2006 her time was 5:48’49, both years as the fastest “woman” going solo.

Jennifer is an assistant to Professors Robert Stavins and Robert Lawrence at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, in Cambridge, MA.  Due to the increasing popularity of woman competing as triathletes, we will now be separating the Triathlete division into the Ironwoman and Ironman divisions for the Blackstone River Valley Greenway Challenge.  Congratulations Jennifer!

One of our Own, in Action! New Director of Development - We welcome Jennifer Teguis of North Smithfield, RI, as the Director of Development for the Greenway Challenge.  Jennifer knows and loves the Challenge and has been an active participant on the team of Desperate Housewives for the last two years.

Combining her passion and enthusiasm for the event with significant fund-raising experience, Jennifer will help the Steering Committee maintain the 'local' character of this Blackstone Valley event while making it a more rewarding experience for all!  If you know a company who would like to sponsor the Greenway Challenge, contact Jennifer at jteguis@charter.net or give her a call at 508-864-0022.

Greenway Challenge Donation is Hot CorridorKeeper Auction Item!

During the live auction at the John H. Chaffee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor Commission's Annual Dinner, held on March 8, 2007 at Wright's Farm, the bidding was hot and heavy for the Greenway Challenge team registration package. Team Great Canadian had hardly appeared on the floor in full Greenway Challenge attire to get the crowd pumped up when Massachusetts State Representative George Peterson was declared the winning bidder at $750! All proceeds raised from this auction will go to support programs of the Corridor Keepers.

Blackstone River Coalition Check Presentation - Members of the Blackstone River Valley Greenway Challenge Steering Committee presented the Blackstone River Coalition (BRC) with a check for $2,500 at the BRC’s board meeting on Thursday, January 4, 2007. “We are thrilled to receive this generous donation,” Jackie Murphy, coordinator for the BRC, said. “The Blackstone River flows through two states and affects 29 communities in its watershed. This will go far to help us work with communities in the Blackstone River watershed to better manage stormwater and to advance our efforts to make the Blackstone ‘Clean by 2015.’ On behalf of the BRC, a huge thanks to everyone who participated in the Greenway Challenge.”
