Corridor Star Awards presented to Kenny Rogers and Paul Carvalho |
|
Corridor Star Awards were presented to
Kenny Rogers and Paul Carvalho on February 28, 2008 at the
John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage
Corridor Commission's meeting held at
Northgate, in Lincoln, RI. Kenny and Paul are exceptional
examples of an outstanding partnership working towards
supporting the Corridor's mission, goals and programs. For
the last seven years, Kenny and Paul have served on the
Logistics Committee for the UniBank Blackstone River Valley
Greenway Challenge. |

From left is Ted
Sanderson, Chair of
the National Heritage Corridor Commission, Kenny Rogers,
Paul Carvalho and Executive Director Jan Reitsma |
Each year, they go above and beyond
their duties to ensure the Greenway Challenge Course in the
Blackstone River State Park is safe and 'picture perfect' on
the day of the event. They attend monthly committee meetings
to help in the planning of the Challenge, they work in
partnership with other organizations to create and prepare
transition sites, and they host meetings in RI DEM's beautiful
facilities.
Kenny and Paul's work, whether on special events or
projects, all bring public awareness and help to support the
work of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental
Management and the John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley
National Heritage Corridor Commission on many programs and
projects which include:
~ Restoration of the
Wilbur Kelly House Museum
~ Development of the Blackstone River Bikeway
~ Opening of the Blackstone State Park Visitor Center at RI
295
~ Completion of the Martin Street Bridge
~ Maintenance and Caretaking of Lincoln Woods State Park.
Kenny and Paul's devotion, hard work and passion in
their caring for our parks, river and bikeway are to be
applauded. |

Calling all
non-profit partners! Every year the
Greenway Challenge Steering Committee is proud to
make a charitable contribution to a
Blackstone
Valley non-profit organization that
is working to promote our mission which is to promote
the recreational opportunities in the
Blackstone River
Valley. Working with partner
organizations, the Greenway Challenge supports clean
water campaigns, hiking and biking trails, wildlife
projects, environmental education and development of
water way access.
Last year, we presented a check for $2,500 to the
Blackstone River Bikeway Association that is working
to advance the development of the bikeway especially
in Massachusetts.
If you think your organization
would benefit from a contribution from this year’s
Greenway Challenge
and if your organization
is able to host a transition site on the day of the
event, please send us a letter of no more than two
pages outlining what your mission is and how your
organization would use this donation. A
representative from your organization should then be
prepared to be involved in the event’s pre-planning
by attending monthly logistics committee meetings
along with coordinating your organization’s
commitment to host the transition site on the day of
the event.
Please include your
organization's name, the contact person's daytime
phone number and e-mail address, the group's mailing
address and web site URL. The submission should be
mailed to Greenway Challenge Request,
One Depot Square, Woonsocket, RI, 02895
Attn: Barbara Dixon by May 1, 2008. |

Dear Friends,
As we look out the window at a wintry storm it's hard to
imagine cycling on our back roads in a few weeks. But,
happily, that time will be here before long! We had an
excellent touring year in 2007 - meeting wonderful people
from ages 6 to 78! While the 6 year old pedaled a tag-a-long
behind Mom and Dad, our "most experienced" rider was part of
a group from Alberta, Canada - another first for us.
Discovering new inns is always a pleasure for us and we
found a gem in the Vienna Restaurant & Historic Inn.
Located in Southbridge, MA we are featuring this inn as part
of two different itineraries. A trend for our self-guided
trips is for participants to cycle from inn to inn while
their luggage is moved for them and this year we are
increasing these offerings. These trips can begin any day of
the week and extra days can be easily added to any tour. We
look forward to hearing from old friends and meeting new
ones in 2008!

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can participate in the Greenway Challenge?
Anyone over 16 years of age can
participate in the event. We encourage teams to compete and
for team members to depend on each other to have a
successful day. If a member of your team has a special
circumstance or need, please let us know and we will try to
accommodate that to make their experience as enjoyable as
possible.
Why can't I get course maps earlier?
We schedule two back-to-back Captains
Meetings to distribute course maps, answer questions and to
allow transition site captains to explain any logistic
problems to you. We realize that some of you come from a
distance to participate and we are glad that you do, but
considering the time and detail that goes into planning the
course -- and how fast conditions can change including last
minute DPW or highway
construction projects -- releasing the maps to everyone at
the same time is only fair and helps us be as precise as we
can be with course safety. |
